In 2014 a close friend of mine, Carla, delivered her daughter Vera at home in Mallorca and I was fascinated by her birthing choice. Then in 2016, I decided I wanted to become a Mother. As I spoke to her she recommended I find a Doula course where I would learn about pregnancy and birth. Immediately I searched and enrolled on a two-month intensive course with Quiero Ser Doula.
In my Doula education, I learnt about Obstetric Violence and the ways in which the medical systems and establishments have developed, taught and perpetuated protocols and practices that go against the physiology of birth, and about how the emotional chemistry of the body (our hormones) is denied and overruled, giving way to an increase in postpartum depression, worldwide. As a feminist, I was outraged. Every pregnant person should have the right to be treated with respect, to be given factual informed consent, and to be supported with every decision they make on how they wish to birth.
With my university degrees – BSc in Neuroscience at Manchester University and my MSc in Scientific Translation Technology from Imperial college – I had ample knowledge of physiology and anatomy. Further in my career, I also trained in Gestalt, Family Systems & Body Psychotherapy, in Spain. These two career paths gave me a head start to jump straight into the job. A week after my Doula course was over, Florencia Sabio, the course director, introduced me to British homebirth midwife Krishinda Powers-Duff.
This meeting would change the course of my life forever. I immediately started to work with her. Krishinda is a very experienced medical professional and an outstanding teacher. She trained me and gave me work experience. She taught me the significance and impact that love and support can have on a birthing woman’s psychological, emotional and physical health. After about 9 months of shadowing her work in homebirth, I was ready to support pregnant women in hospitals.
Since then, I provide scientific evidence to help my clients make the right choice for them. There is no right or wrong choice, as long as the choice is always yours. My job is to ensure you empower yourself at every step of the way. Confidence is inside all of us. We just need to find it. My goal is for you to be able look back on your birth story with satisfaction, knowing that you and those whom you chose to support you worked in harmony, to create the most amazing and pleasurable birth experience possible.
